Par les ombres myrteux je prendrai mon repos ;
Vous serez au foyer une vieille accroupie,

Regrettant mon amour et votre fier dédain.
Vivez, si m'en croyez, n'attendez à demain ;

When You Are Very Old
Pierre de Ronsard

When you are very old, in the evening, by the candle,
Seated by the fire, spinning and idly talking,
Say how you sang my verse, marvelling that
'Ronsard praised me in my time of beauty'.

Then you will have not even a maid on hearing such news,
Already half asleep from her tasks,
Who, at the sound of my name, would not wake
Heaping immortal praise upon your name.

I shall be beneath the earth and a boneless phantom
Taking my rest beneath the myrtled shade,
Whilst you will be sitting, old and crumpled, at home

Having dismissed my love; regretting your proud disdain.
Live and have faith; wait not for tomorrow;
Pluck the roses of life as of today.

Meine Liebe verworfen zu haben, sowie Deine stolze Verachtung;
