Lingg was born in Lindau to a family where his father was a court advocate. His cousin
became Bishop of Augsburg.
After schooling in Kempten, he studied medicine in Munich, Freiburg und Berlin graduating
in 1843. He entered the Bavarian army as junior doctor but his deployment against
revolutionaries caused deep depression and paranoia.
He was treated in the military hospital Munich in 1849 being released to relatives after
a few weeks. After a full recovery he was retired from the army and returned to Munich
supported by a pension from royal sources and henceforth, with the support of friends,
devoted himself to literature achieving his first acknowledgement with publication of his
Gedichte, Poems, in 1853 and becoming a leading member of the literary circle,
'der Krokodil'.
He married Seraphine Lang in 1854 and fathered a daughter, Amelie. He was knighted in 1890
to become Hermann, Ritter von Lingg.
