Brise marine

Sea Breeze
Stéphane Mallarmé

My complexion sad, alas! And I have read all the books!
Flee, now! Fly quite away, like inebriate birds
Between the unknown foam and the sky!

Nothing! Not even old gardens reflected in eyes
Will detain this heart that is lost at sea;
O nights! Nor the bare light of my lamp
On the blank paper preserving the white;
Nor the young woman feeding her child.
I am leaving! Steamer with your tilting masts,
Weigh anchor for those exotic climes.

A tedium sorrowed by hopes now dashed
Still believes in the finality of waving farewells.
And, perhaps, if the masts, urged by the storms,
Are those where the wind leans onto the wrecks
Lost without masts- then, without masts, no fertile isles…
But, O my heart, hear the song of the sailors!

Meeresbrise
Stéphane Mallarmé

Leider! Meine Gesichtsfarbe traurig! Und ich habe alle Bücher gelesen!
Flieh jetzt! Flieg weg wie betrunkene Vogel
Zwischen dem Gischt und dem Himmelsgewölbe!

Nichts! Nicht einmal alte Gärten gespiegelt in Augen
Werden dienen, dieses Herz verloren am Meer hinzuhalten;
Oh, Nächte! Noch das grelle Licht meiner Lampe
Auf dem blanken Papiere, das die weiße bewahrt;

Ohne Masten verloren- dann, keine fruchtbaren Inseln…
Aber, mein Herz! Höre das Lied der Matrosen!
